What is a Social Enterprise?
The CDS social enterprises are small businesses with a social objective. The social objective is to provide pre-employment training to individuals who require work experience before applying for work through the traditional business process and to provide meaningful employment to individuals with significant barriers. Participants in our social enterprises benefit in many ways from their employment, from connecting to networks in the community, to building skills in a job that they choose to do.
Some of the businesses are revenue generating, whereby any profit or surplus is reinvested back into the business or shared with the programs that support individuals rather than being driven by the need to deliver profit to shareholders and owners.
The value of these social enterprises reaches far beyond the individuals who work within the businesses. Many of the jobs are out in the community which is helping to change community perceptions and promote inclusion for individuals with significant barriers to traditional employment. The community as a whole also reaps the rewards through a stronger workforce, a more engaged population with strong ties to the community which decreases poverty, crime and other socio-economic issues.
